Arachnis hookeriana (Rchb.f.) Rchb.f. 1886 is a vandaceous epiphyte/lithophyte distributed widely across coastal scrubland or rocky outcrops in Vietnam, the Malay Peninsula, Singapore and Borneo.
The creamy white flowers - tinged with lilac (typical form) or yellow (var. luteola) - are shaped like scorpions, which explains the genus name, in direct reference to those eight-legged predators.Their somewhat musky scent is more likely to attract six-legged pollinators, however: insects fooled by the prospect of a finding a dead scorpion, only to assist in reproducing the species.

Their floricultural potential is also likely to attract two-legged pollinators: orchid breeders who recognise what they can impart in terms of floriferous displays for landscaping or durability as cut flowers. This species is the ancestor of 688 registered hybrids; those bred from the yellow variant 'luteola' (e.g. Arachnis Maggie Oei, Aranda Noorah Alsagoff, Aranda Lee Kuan Yew) are especially free-flowering. In 1981 it was shortlisted alongside the historic local hybrid Papilionanthe [Vanda] Miss Joaquim 'Agnes' as a possible national flower for Singapore. In the popularity stakes, its annual flowering season was no match for the perpetually blooming hybrid. Today, wild specimens may still be seen in situ on Pulau Tekong.[Emrys Chew 2017-03-28]
