History Coelogyne pandurata Lindl. 1853, an epiphytic/semi-terrestrial orchid widely distributed across the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo and the Philippines.
First discovered in Sarawak by Sir Hugh Low, the British colonial administrator and naturalist who was an avid orchid collector. So:
  • - Low despatched the plant to the orchid nursery of Loddiges & Sons, Hackney, England.
  • - Loddiges managed to flower it in 1853, then sent it on to the botanist John Lindley for closer examination.
  • - Lindley assigned it the specific name 'pandurata' (fiddle-shaped) in reference to the lip.
This he considered to be far more significant than either the vivid green floral segments or the striking black markings in the centre, which led others to call this the 'Black Orchid'. (Emrys Chew Ph.D.)
  • Coelogyne peltastes var. unguiculata J.J.Sm. (1927)
  • Pleione pandurata (Lindl.) Kuntze (1891)
